If you’re flying with Air Busan, you might want to rethink what you pack in your carry-on. The South Korean airline has officially banned power banks from hand luggage, a move aimed at enhancing passenger and aircraft safety.
Why the Sudden Ban?
The decision follows a fire incident on January 28, 2025, suspected to have been caused by a power bank stored in an overhead bin. While no injuries were reported, the incident resulted in significant damage to the aircraft. In response, Air Busan has taken pre-emptive action to prevent similar risks in the future.
A First Among Airlines
Most airlines already prohibit power banks in checked baggage, but Air Busan has gone a step further by restricting them in carry-ons as well. This makes it the first airline to introduce such a rule, raising questions about whether others might follow suit.
Industry Reactions
Aviation expert Warren Chim Wing-nin, deputy chairman of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers’ aircraft division, pointed out that this restriction is stricter than current international guidelines. While acknowledging that the ban could reduce fire risks, he also questioned whether it was a practical solution for travelers.
He suggested that whether other airlines adopt a similar policy will likely depend on risk assessments by aviation groups like the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and individual carriers.
What This Means for Air Busan Passengers
If you’re flying with Air Busan, be sure to leave your power bank at home or find alternative ways to keep your devices charged. This could mean relying on in-flight USB ports or charging at the airport before boarding.
As for whether this policy will catch on with other airlines? That remains to be seen. For now, it’s best to double-check airline regulations before packing your bags to avoid any last-minute surprises at security.
