The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has released its Mid-Year Update to the Asia Pacific Visitor Forecasts 2025–2027, projecting a robust 692 million international visitor arrivals (IVAs) across the region in 2025. This marks a significant step toward a full recovery, with arrivals expected to climb to 801 million by 2027 under the medium-growth scenario, driven by strategic policies, enhanced connectivity, and evolving traveler preferences.
Key Highlights
-
China Leads the Charge: China is poised to remain the top inbound destination, with projections of up to 148 million visitors by 2027. The country’s expanded visa-free transit policies and growing outbound travel market continue to fuel regional tourism growth.
-
Standout Recoveries: Türkiye and Mongolia are forecast to exceed pre-pandemic levels, showcasing exceptional recovery rates, while Japan and the Maldives lead with 155% and 148% recovery rates by 2026, respectively.
-
Emerging Source Markets: While China, the USA, South Korea, and Japan dominate outbound travel, India, the UK, and the Russian Federation are gaining traction, diversifying the region’s visitor base.
-
Policy and Innovation Drive Growth: Initiatives like Thailand’s “Six Countries, One Destination” and digital nomad visa programs in Thailand and Chinese Taipei are reshaping travel patterns, alongside technological advancements and sustainable tourism efforts.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite the optimistic outlook, PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid cautioned that geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, and local resistance to overtourism pose challenges. “This forecast is more than numbers—it’s a roadmap for sustainable growth,” Hamid said. “Stakeholders must prioritize quality tourism, environmental conservation, and community engagement to navigate these complexities.”
The report, developed with the Hospitality and Tourism Research Centre at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, emphasizes the role of digital transformation and wellness travel in shaping the region’s tourism landscape. Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia and Indonesia, is seeing strong growth, with Malaysia reporting 10.1 million arrivals in Q1 2025 and Indonesia anticipating record-breaking visitor spending.
Looking Ahead
With Asia-Pacific accounting for over 70% of regional arrivals, the region’s tourism sector is poised for a dynamic future. PATA’s detailed forecasts for 39 destinations, supported by Visa and Euromonitor International, offer critical insights for policymakers and industry leaders.
