The Australian government has issued an urgent travel advisory for Thailand, citing an “ongoing risk of terrorism” following the discovery of multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in popular tourist destinations, including Phuket, Krabi, and Phang Nga. The alert, issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through its Smartraveller service, urges travelers to exercise a high degree of caution across the country, particularly in crowded tourist areas and near Phuket International Airport, where an explosive device was found on June 26, 2025.
Thai authorities have confirmed the discovery of at least 11 IEDs across the three provinces, with all devices safely defused. Two suspects, identified as 29-year-old Muhamah and 27-year-old Sulaiman, were arrested in Phang Nga on June 24, 2025, in connection with the plot. A third suspect from Narathiwat province was apprehended the following day, with materials linked to bomb-making found in his vehicle. Thai police believe the suspects are tied to the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), a separatist group active in Thailand’s southern provinces, aiming to disrupt the tourism industry.
The advisory highlights that “popular tourist areas may be the target of terrorist attacks anywhere across Thailand, including Bangkok and Phuket.” Phuket International Airport has implemented heightened security measures, and travelers are advised to arrive early for flights. DFAT also recommends avoiding large crowds and protests, which could turn violent, especially amid ongoing political unrest in Bangkok, where demonstrations have called for the resignation of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra over a border dispute with Cambodia.
Thai officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, have emphasized that the country remains safe for tourists and are increasing security in key areas. However, the Australian advisory also warns travelers to reconsider travel to Thailand’s southern provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat due to ongoing insurgent activity.
