Cambodia has officially inaugurated the Techo International Airport, a major new gateway for the capital that is expected to reshape the country’s aviation and tourism landscape for decades to come.

Located on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, the $2 billion facility began operations today, marking the end of commercial international flights at the older Phnom Penh International Airport. The new airport, with its modern runways and expansive passenger terminals, is being hailed as a symbol of Cambodia’s ambitions to become a stronger player in regional air travel.

The first phase of Techo International Airport is designed to handle up to 13 million passengers annually, with future expansions planned to raise capacity to 30 million by 2030 and eventually 50 million by 2050. Officials say the scale and design rival some of Southeast Asia’s busiest hubs, giving Cambodia the infrastructure it needs to attract more airlines and routes.

Tourism experts believe the opening will deliver a significant boost to the country’s economy. “Cambodia has long relied on Angkor Wat and Siem Reap as its international calling card, but with this airport, Phnom Penh can emerge as a true hub for both business and leisure travelers,” said Sok Ratha, an analyst at a local travel consultancy.

Beyond tourism, the airport is expected to play a vital role in trade, with expanded cargo facilities providing faster access for exports such as textiles, agricultural products, and electronics. Improved infrastructure is also likely to encourage foreign investment, as businesses gain confidence in Cambodia’s ability to support large-scale logistics.

For passengers, the shift means more direct connections and smoother travel experiences. Modern terminals equipped with advanced screening systems, spacious waiting areas, and a greater selection of shops and restaurants aim to deliver a more comfortable journey compared to the aging facilities at the old airport.

With its grand opening, Techo International Airport signals Cambodia’s intention to keep pace with its Southeast Asian neighbors in aviation. As one travel official put it, “This is not just a new airport—it’s Cambodia’s runway to the future.”
