For years, the lack of direct flights between India and the Philippines has been a significant hurdle for business expansion and tourism between the two nations. However, this may soon change as the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is in discussions with Air India to establish a direct air route, responding to the increasing demand for international travel.
In a statement issued on February 19, CAAP confirmed ongoing talks with Air India executives regarding the launch of these direct flights. Discussions covered essential documentation, technical requirements, and procedural steps necessary for flight approvals. Officials also reviewed proposed routes and potential flight frequencies.
CAAP Director General Manuel Antonio Tamayo emphasized the agency’s commitment to streamlining the approval process while upholding strict safety and operational standards. He also highlighted the mutual optimism shared by CAAP and Air India about the economic and cultural advantages of direct connectivity, anticipating increased passenger traffic and expanded business opportunities between the two countries.
The push for direct flights is further bolstered by growing tourism between India and the Philippines. In 2024, Indian tourist arrivals in the Philippines rose by 12%, reaching approximately 79,000. To support this trend, the Philippine government has introduced an e-Visa system, making visa applications more convenient for Indian travelers.
Additionally, other airlines, such as IndiGo, are being considered as potential operators for this promising route.
