India has been recognized as Asia’s second most sustainability-conscious travel market, according to Agoda’s 2025 Sustainable Travel Survey. With 82% of Indian travelers prioritizing eco-friendly choices—well above the Asian average of 68%—this reflects a strong shift towards responsible tourism.
Growing Commitment to Sustainable Travel
The survey, conducted across 11 Asian markets with over 6,000 participants, highlights a major transformation in Indian travel preferences. Increasingly, Indian travelers seek authentic experiences, eco-conscious accommodations, and off-peak travel to minimize their environmental impact.
Personal Values Driving Sustainable Travel Choices
For Indian travelers, sustainability is more than a trend—it’s a personal commitment. The survey found that:
24% prioritize sustainable travel due to personal beliefs and values.
21% focus on authentic and community-driven tourism.
16% choose eco-certified accommodations to align with green practices.
16% prefer walking, biking, or public transport over driving to cut carbon emissions.
16% actively reduce waste by carrying reusable water bottles and other sustainable essentials.
Conscious Travel on the Rise
As environmental concerns grow, Indian travelers are making conscious choices to minimize their footprint. Agoda’s research shows that 21% opt for off-peak travel to reduce overcrowding, benefiting both local environments and communities. This shift signifies a broader movement towards conservation-focused tourism.
Agoda Expands Eco Deals Program
To further encourage sustainable travel, Agoda has launched its 2025 Eco Deals program, offering up to 15% discounts on eco-friendly hotels across 10 Asian markets. Now expanded to Japan and South Korea, this initiative allows Indian travelers to engage in responsible tourism while also supporting conservation efforts—$1 from every booking is donated to WWF projects.
Krishna Rathi, Senior Country Director for India Subcontinent and MEA at Agoda, emphasized that this initiative aligns with Agoda’s goal of making sustainable travel both accessible and affordable.
India’s Role in Asia’s Green Travel Future
As India’s tourism industry continues to expand, it is setting a benchmark for sustainable travel in Asia. The growing awareness among travelers signals a long-term shift where eco-conscious choices become the norm.
With increasing demand for green accommodations and conservation-driven initiatives, industry leaders—including hotels, tour operators, and policymakers—must adapt to this evolving landscape.
Looking Ahead
Agoda’s survey confirms India’s leading role in Asia’s green travel revolution. With 82% of travelers prioritizing sustainability, the travel industry must innovate to meet these eco-conscious demands.
As India cements itself as a key player in sustainable tourism, the future of travel is set to be more responsible, immersive, and environmentally friendly.
