A diplomatic row between India and the Maldives has led to a surge in cancellations from Indian tourists, significantly impacting the island nation’s tourism industry.
How It Started
The controversy began when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Lakshadweep, an island group in Kerala, India. Sharing images of his visit—including snorkeling and morning walks—Modi’s posts quickly gained traction, with many Indian social media users drawing comparisons between Lakshadweep and the Maldives.
However, this did not sit well with some Maldivian officials. Zahid Rameez, a council member of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), mocked Modi’s visit, claiming that India’s attempt to rival the Maldives in tourism was unrealistic. He dismissed the idea of Lakshadweep matching the Maldives’ standards, calling India’s aspirations “delusional.”
The Boycott Movement
Rameez’s comments sparked outrage among Indian social media users, leading to a massive backlash. The hashtag #BoycottMaldives began trending, and many Indian travelers started canceling their planned trips to the Maldives. In a show of solidarity, Indian online travel agency EaseMyTrip even suspended flight bookings to the Maldives.
This development is particularly concerning for the Maldivian tourism sector, as Indian tourists were the top visitors until December 2023. Their absence could pose a serious challenge to the country’s economy, which relies heavily on tourism.
Maldives Government Responds
In response to the escalating situation, the Maldivian government took swift action by suspending three ministers responsible for the offensive remarks. On 7 January 2025, an official statement was issued, stressing the importance of maintaining diplomatic decorum and fostering respectful relations between the Maldives and its international partners.
The government also vowed to take disciplinary action against officials making derogatory remarks, hoping to ease tensions and restore ties with Indian travelers.
Despite the Maldives’ efforts to control the damage, the impact of this controversy on its tourism sector remains uncertain. As Indian travelers reconsider their destination choices, the situation continues to unfold.
