India’s wellness tourism industry is experiencing a vibrant surge, buoyed by rising global interest and strong economic contributions. Speaking at the Wellness Tourism Summit held in New Delhi on March 6, 2025, Prahlad Singh Patel, India’s Minister of State for Tourism and Culture, highlighted the sector’s impressive momentum. He noted that wellness tourism raked in US$19 billion in 2024, with projections estimating a climb to US$24 billion by 2026.
The minister credited India’s rich heritage of traditional practices like Ayurveda, yoga, and meditation as key drivers attracting international visitors. These offerings, combined with a growing domestic focus on health and well-being, have positioned India as a top destination for wellness seekers. Patel also pointed to government initiatives aimed at boosting the sector, including infrastructure upgrades and promotional campaigns targeting key markets like the US, UK, and Southeast Asia.
Data from the Global Wellness Institute supports this optimism, showing India ranking among the top 10 wellness tourism markets worldwide. In 2024 alone, the country welcomed over 6 million wellness-focused travelers, a figure expected to grow by 20% annually over the next two years. Industry experts at the summit echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the role of private investment in luxury wellness retreats and affordable spa facilities.
However, challenges remain. Stakeholders called for streamlined visa processes and better rural connectivity to unlock the full potential of lesser-known wellness hubs. Despite these hurdles, India’s wellness tourism sector appears poised for a healthy future, blending ancient traditions with modern appeal to cater to a global audience.
