Indonesia experienced a significant rise in foreign tourist arrivals in 2024, with numbers increasing by 19% to reach 13.9 million compared to 2023. In December alone, the country welcomed 1.24 million foreign tourists, marking an 8.72% increase from the same month in 2023.
Malaysia Leads as Top Tourist Source
Malaysian tourists continued to be the largest group of foreign visitors, maintaining their top position since 2022. In 2024, a total of 2.27 million Malaysian travelers visited Indonesia, followed by tourists from Australia, Singapore, China, Timor-Leste, and India.
Key Entry Points for Foreign Tourists
Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali remained the busiest entry point, receiving 6.3 million foreign tourists. Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta ranked second with 2.52 million arrivals, followed by Batam Port with 1.31 million.
Spending and Economic Contribution
The average expenditure of foreign tourists in 2024 reached US$1,391, with the highest spending on accommodation, food and beverages, and souvenir shopping. The largest spending contributions came from European visitors.
Indonesia’s tourism sector generated approximately US$16.7 billion in foreign exchange earnings, a 19.3% increase from US$14.63 billion in 2023. The government estimated tourism’s contribution to the national GDP in 2024 to range between 4.01% and 4.5%.
Job Growth and Hotel Occupancy
The number of jobs in the tourism sector is expected to rise in 2025, reaching 25.01 million, a 2.5% increase from 24.41 million in 2024.
The hotel room occupancy rate for star-classified hotels showed a positive trend, reaching 52.57% in 2024, an increase of 1.45 percentage points from 51.12% in 2023.
Domestic Tourism on the Rise
Domestic tourism also saw a significant boost, with 1.02 billion trips recorded in 2024, a 21.61% increase from 839.66 million trips in 2023.
The Island of Java remained the top destination for domestic tourists, accounting for 69.19% of total trips. East Java, West Java, and Central Java were the most visited regions.
