If you’ve ever wished you could skip the pricey hotels and just sleep your way through Japan’s scenic landscapes, you’re in luck. A new capsule hotel on wheels is about to hit the road, offering budget-conscious travelers a comfortable ride—without the backache.

Launching on March 4, this double-decker sleeper bus features lie-flat bunk beds for up to 24 passengers, making the overnight journey from Tokyo to Kochi Prefecture a whole lot smoother. For now, it’s running as a trial service once a week, with fares starting at just 7,300 yen (US$48) one way—a steal compared to skyrocketing hotel prices.

The Ultimate Overnight Bus Upgrade

Unlike your average long-haul bus with cramped seats and questionable headrests, this new ride—called Sommeil Profond (French for “deep sleep”)—comes with fully reclining beds, reinforced seat belts, and protective railings, so you can rest easy even if the road gets a little bumpy.

The service is expected to be a hit with backpackers, budget travelers, and concert-goers heading to Tokyo for big events. And if the trial run is successful, a full-scale launch is planned for later this year.

“Cheap but Comfortable” – A Game-Changer for Bus Travel

“Many people think overnight buses are affordable but uncomfortable,” says Akitoshi Umebara, president of Kochi Ekimae Kanko, the company behind the service. “I want to change that by offering lie-flat seats and making buses the go-to travel option.”

With Japan’s booming tourism pushing accommodation prices higher than ever, this sleeper bus could be the perfect solution for travelers who want to save money—without sacrificing comfort.
