Malaysia is poised to become a global tourism powerhouse with the launch of the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign, an ambitious initiative targeting 35.6 million international visitors and RM147.1 billion (approximately US$33 billion) in tourism revenue by 2026. Officially unveiled by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on January 6, 2025, at the MAB Engineering Complex in Sepang, the campaign is set to elevate Malaysia’s status as a premier travel destination through sustainable tourism, enhanced connectivity, and innovative travel experiences.

The VM2026 campaign, spearheaded by Tourism Malaysia, emphasizes three core strategies: creating demand through aggressive marketing, increasing tourist traffic with strategic partnerships, and prioritizing key markets such as China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Australia. The campaign’s vibrant logo, featuring the Malayan Sun Bear mascots Wira and Manja, symbolizes Malaysia’s cultural richness and commitment to wildlife conservation. The logo is prominently displayed on aircraft from Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Batik Air, marking a unified effort to promote the nation globally. The campaign’s theme song, Surreal Experiences, captures Malaysia’s unique blend of cultural heritage, modern attractions, and natural beauty.

To enhance the traveler experience, Tourism Malaysia has partnered with Mastercard to develop the Travel Malaysia app, a one-stop platform offering personalized travel content and exclusive offers, set to launch later in 2025. Mastercard’s Priceless program will also introduce unique experiences showcasing Malaysia’s diverse attractions, from Kuala Lumpur’s bustling skyline to the pristine rainforests of Sabah and Sarawak. Additionally, the Malaysian government is investing heavily in transportation infrastructure, including new flight routes from second-tier Chinese cities and expanded international connectivity, with over 3,100 weekly international flights added between June and December 2024, boosting passenger capacity by 620,000 seats.

Malaysia’s tourism sector is already showing strong momentum. In the first quarter of 2024, the country welcomed 5.8 million foreign arrivals, a 32.5% increase from the previous year, with top markets including Singapore, Indonesia, China, and India. The introduction of visa-free entry for Indian nationals, extended until December 2026, has driven a 72% year-on-year increase in Indian visitors, with over 1 million arrivals in the first 11 months of 2024. The campaign also targets 500,000 UK visitors in 2026, building on the 345,000 recorded in 2024, through enhanced partnerships and cultural promotions.

Sustainability is a cornerstone of VM2026, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The campaign promotes niche tourism sectors like ecotourism, adventure travel, and cultural experiences, spotlighting lesser-known destinations such as the Langkawi Geopark, Endau Rompin National Park, and Sarawak Delta National Geopark. These efforts aim to balance economic growth with environmental preservation, fostering job creation and community empowerment.

“VM2026 is more than a tourism campaign; it’s a vision for sustainable growth and cultural preservation,” said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the launch. “We are showcasing Malaysia’s unique blend of cultures, natural wonders, and hospitality to the world, while ensuring long-term benefits for our communities.”

As Malaysia prepares for 2026, strategic collaborations with airlines, online travel agents, and regional partners, including the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle, will enhance its appeal as a unified ASEAN tourism destination. With a robust tourism infrastructure and a focus on high-value, sustainable travel, Malaysia is on track to redefine its position in the global tourism landscape.
