Malaysia has officially surpassed Thailand to become Southeast Asia’s most-visited country in 2024, recording an impressive 38 million foreign tourist arrivals, according to the Southeast Asian Gallery. This marks a significant shift in the region’s tourism landscape, with Malaysia’s diverse attractions, strategic promotions, and enhanced connectivity outpacing Thailand’s long-standing dominance.

Malaysia’s rise to the top comes as Chinese tourist arrivals to Thailand have declined sharply, dropping from 560,000 to under 300,000 per month, with many opting for Malaysia’s vibrant cities, rainforests, and cultural heritage. From March 31 to April 6, 2025, Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Ministry reported 92,262 Malaysian tourists visiting Thailand, a 12.8% increase from the previous week, but Malaysia welcomed even higher numbers, narrowing the gap significantly with 1.23 million visitors compared to Thailand’s 1.38 million year-to-date.

The country’s appeal lies in its blend of modern and traditional experiences. Kuala Lumpur’s bustling Chinatown, iconic Batu Caves, and world-class culinary scene, featuring dishes like nasi lemak, draw millions. Malaysia’s collaboration with digital platforms like Agoda and Tourism Malaysia for Visit Malaysia 2026 has also boosted its visibility, targeting 45 million international visitors.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s tourism has been impacted by global economic uncertainty and a recent earthquake in Bangkok, which claimed over 2,000 lives and disrupted travel plans. Despite Thailand’s renowned beaches, temples, and nightlife, Malaysia’s strategic initiatives, including sustainable tourism efforts through the Sustainable Tourism Academy and a new ASEAN visa system, have made it more accessible and attractive.

The resumed Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok train service, set for completion by late 2025, is expected to enhance cross-border travel, but Malaysia’s current momentum suggests it will maintain its lead. Industry experts attribute Malaysia’s success to its affordability, visa-free stays for long-term visitors, and targeted marketing campaigns, positioning it as a top destination for budget and luxury travelers alike.

As Southeast Asia’s tourism landscape evolves, Malaysia’s rise signals a new era of regional competition, with its rich heritage and forward-thinking strategies captivating global travelers.
