Myanmar has officially lifted its tourist visa suspension, marking a significant step toward reviving its tourism industry. As of April 22, 2025, the country’s eVisa system is fully operational, allowing international travelers to apply online for entry to explore Myanmar’s rich cultural heritage, ancient temples, and scenic landscapes.

The decision comes after a period of restricted access due to political instability and a recent earthquake that raised safety concerns. The Myanmar government, aiming to boost economic recovery, has reinstated visa processing for tourists, with the eVisa platform now accessible for citizens of eligible countries. Travelers can apply for single-entry visas valid for up to 28 days, with processing times averaging 3-5 business days.

Key destinations like Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, and Inle Lake are once again open, with local authorities emphasizing enhanced safety measures at major tourist sites. The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism has reported that over 200 licensed tour operators are ready to welcome visitors, offering guided experiences to iconic sites such as the Shwedagon Pagoda and Bagan’s ancient temples.

However, travelers are urged to exercise caution. The U.S. State Department and other international advisories maintain warnings due to ongoing civil unrest in certain regions, advising against travel to conflict zones. The recent 5.8-magnitude earthquake in Shan State has also prompted calls for vigilance, though major tourist areas report minimal damage.

Local businesses, heavily reliant on tourism, are optimistic about the reopening. “This is a new chapter for us,” said a guesthouse owner in Bagan. “We’re ready to share Myanmar’s beauty with the world again.” Industry experts predict a gradual return of visitors, with eco-tourism and cultural immersion expected to drive interest in 2025.

Travelers planning a trip should verify visa requirements, monitor travel advisories, and book through reputable operators to ensure a safe and seamless experience. For eVisa applications and updates, visit the official Myanmar eVisa portal.
