The arid plains of Ningxia may not seem like an obvious location for world-class winemaking, yet the region is quickly emerging as a top destination for wine enthusiasts. Visitors can now embark on guided tours through its vineyards, discovering firsthand how award-winning wines are produced.
West of Ningxia’s capital, Yinchuan, the Shenyang Highway stretches across a sunbaked, rocky terrain. On one side lies the city’s outskirts; on the other, the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains—a 200km-long natural barrier separating Inner Mongolia’s Gobi Desert from the region’s dry yet fertile plains.
The rugged silhouette of the Helan Mountains appears like a mirage on the horizon, its details obscured by a morning haze. “It’s a shame the view isn’t clearer today—it’s a spectacular way to start the tour,” remarks “Kiki” Chen Shu, my driver and the founder of Ningxia Wine, a boutique tour company specializing in vineyard experiences in the Helan Mountains East wine region.
Ningxia’s journey into winemaking began in 1998, following extensive research into viticulture that led to the transformation of its saline-alkaline soil. Since then, vineyards have expanded across 3,000 hectares of once-barren land between the Helan Mountains and the Yellow River’s alluvial plains.
Despite its modest size, Helan Mountains East—which includes subregions like Shizuishan, Yinchuan, Yongning, Qingtongxia, and Hongsipu—has been likened to Argentina’s famed Mendoza wine region due to its similar geographical conditions. Recognizing its potential, Ningxia has established a provincial wine bureau and invested heavily in vineyard development, now boasting over 200 wineries.
The region gained international recognition in 2011 when the Jia Bei Lan Grand Reserve 2009, a cabernet sauvignon from Helan Qingxue winery, won the prestigious international trophy for Bordeaux blends at the Decanter World Wine Awards. Today, Ningxia continues to solidify its reputation as China’s most promising wine-producing area, with guided tours offering a closer look at its flourishing industry.
