The Philippine government has announced a new visa-free entry policy for Taiwanese tourists, effective June 1, 2025, as part of its strategy to strengthen bilateral ties and enhance tourism from key Asian markets. The initiative, unveiled by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Bureau of Immigration, allows Taiwanese visitors to stay in the Philippines for up to 30 days without a visa, aligning with similar policies recently introduced for Indian tourists.

The move aims to capitalize on Taiwan’s growing outbound travel market, with over 1.2 million Taiwanese tourists traveling to Southeast Asia in 2024. “Taiwan is a vital partner, and this policy reflects our commitment to fostering closer cultural and economic ties,” said Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco. “We invite Taiwanese travelers to experience our world-class beaches, vibrant festivals, and warm Filipino hospitality.”

The visa-free scheme is expected to boost arrivals to popular destinations like Boracay, Palawan, and Cebu, while promoting lesser-known spots such as Siargao and Bohol. The DOT projects an additional 150,000 Taiwanese visitors annually, contributing an estimated PHP 8 billion (approximately USD 140 million) to the tourism economy.

To support the initiative, the Philippines has launched a targeted marketing campaign in Taiwan, highlighting direct flights from Taipei to Manila, Cebu, and Clark, operated by carriers like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and EVA Air. The DOT is also collaborating with Taiwanese travel agencies to offer tailored packages, emphasizing eco-tourism, culinary experiences, and adventure activities.

Local tourism stakeholders have welcomed the policy. “This opens new opportunities for businesses, especially in hospitality and tour operations,” said Maria Santos, president of the Philippine Hotel Owners Association. However, concerns about infrastructure capacity and health protocols linger, given the recent regional surge in COVID-19 cases. The DOT has assured travelers that enhanced safety measures, including vaccination verification and contactless check-ins, remain in place.

The visa-free entry for Taiwanese visitors follows the Philippines’ aggressive push to diversify its tourism market, which saw 5.9 million foreign arrivals in 2024. The country aims to reach 7.7 million visitors in 2025, competing with regional rivals like Thailand and Vietnam. Analysts view the policy as a strategic step to solidify the Philippines’ position as a top Southeast Asian destination.
