In a groundbreaking move, Sarawak has become the first Malaysian state to own an airline. The Sarawak state government has unveiled AirBorneo, a new airline born from the acquisition of MASwings, previously under the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG). This ambitious step sets the stage for Sarawak to become a key aviation hub in Borneo, enhancing connectivity across the region and offering a fresh gateway to ASEAN countries.

Sarawak Premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, unveiled the plans at a signing ceremony in Kuching, sharing his vision of a more connected, accessible state. “This is not just about flying passengers; it’s about opening doors to opportunities. AirBorneo will forge new connections to both domestic and international destinations, benefitting our communities and businesses,” he said.

A Full-Service Airline with Big Plans

What sets AirBorneo apart? It will operate as a full-service carrier (FSC), ensuring passengers enjoy superior in-flight services and experiences. With the aim of showcasing Sarawak’s regional prestige, the airline hopes to position the state as a premium travel destination within Borneo and beyond.

Initially, the focus will be on rural air services, ensuring that even the most remote corners of Borneo are connected to the rest of Malaysia and the world. However, the vision doesn’t stop there—AirBorneo plans to broaden its horizons, forging partnerships and code-sharing agreements with other international carriers, including Malaysia Airlines. This expansion will ensure that Sarawak’s global connectivity reaches new heights, with destinations like Germany, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, and Thailand already in the pipeline.

New International Airport on the Horizon

To make this a reality, the state is also considering a new international airport in Kuching, further elevating the region’s accessibility. It’s an exciting time for Sarawak’s tourism and business sectors, as increased connectivity promises to draw more visitors from across the globe.

A New Chapter for Sarawak’s Aviation Sector

The acquisition of MASwings, which historically serviced rural areas with turboprop aircraft, marks a new era for Sarawak’s aviation sector. The airline will continue to serve key destinations within Sabah and Sarawak, with Kota Kinabalu and Miri as its main hubs.

As this ambitious venture takes flight, Premier Abang Johari reiterated the importance of working closely with MAG to ensure a smooth transition, minimise disruptions, and maintain high service standards. It’s a new chapter for Sarawak, one that promises to boost both tourism and business, making it a must-visit destination in Southeast Asia.
