Seoul is moving forward with its plans to introduce a water bus system on the Han River, with trial operations already underway. The eco-friendly boats, designed for efficiency and sustainability, will operate every 15 minutes, stopping at seven designated docks.
Two water buses departed from Sacheon in South Gyeongsang province on February 24 and arrived near Yeouido on February 27, successfully completing a three-day test journey through the Korea Strait and the Yellow Sea. The vessels will now undergo further testing throughout March before their official launch in the first half of the year.
Constructed from lightweight aluminium alloy, the river buses consume less fuel and are fully recyclable, making them a more sustainable alternative to traditional ferries. They are powered by a combination of lithium-ion batteries and diesel generators, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 52% compared to conventional diesel-powered boats.
Seoul’s city government envisions the Han River water bus system as a convenient and environmentally responsible mode of transport, enhancing urban mobility while minimizing its carbon footprint.
