Gyeongju, often called “the museum without walls,” is a city in southeastern South Korea renowned for its rich history and cultural heritage. Once the capital of the ancient Silla Kingdom, it played a central role in Korean history for nearly a thousand years. The city is home to numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto, both masterpieces of Buddhist architecture.

Tumuli Park in Gyeongju features ancient royal tombs, with large grassy mounds marking the resting places of Silla kings and nobles. Cheomseongdae Observatory, the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in Asia, showcases the Silla Kingdom’s advanced scientific achievements. Gyeongju National Museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts, including gold crowns, pottery, and Buddhist relics, providing insight into Silla culture.

Anapji Pond, an artificial pond built during the Silla era, offers a serene atmosphere, particularly stunning at night when the pavilions are illuminated. The city’s Yangdong Folk Village, a UNESCO site, preserves traditional Korean architecture and Confucian culture. Nearby, Namsan Mountain is dotted with ancient carvings, pagodas, and Buddha statues, making it a spiritual and hiking destination.

Gyeongju is also known for its scenic beauty, including Bomun Lake, a popular spot for leisure activities and cherry blossom viewing in spring. The city’s culinary delights include Gyeongju bread (Hwangnam bread), a sweet red bean-filled pastry, and ssambap, a traditional Korean wrap meal. Modern attractions like the Gyeongju World amusement park and the Gyeongju Tower blend the city’s history with contemporary entertainment.

Cycling is a popular way to explore the city’s historical sites and picturesque landscapes. Gyeongju’s slow-paced, peaceful atmosphere contrasts with Korea’s bustling urban centers, making it an ideal destination for those seeking cultural and natural experiences. The city’s connection to the Silla Kingdom and its preservation of historical treasures offer visitors a journey back in time. Whether exploring ancient ruins, hiking scenic trails, or enjoying local delicacies, Gyeongju provides a unique glimpse into Korea’s rich heritage.
